Our June 2013 Perspectives continues to highlight the expertise of colleagues working with patients diagnosed with head and neck cancer. I wish to thank the many readers who have contacted me to share their appreciation of the authors and topics that have been shared through Perspectives. As always, it is a pleasure to bring you such a variety of viewpoints with the common themes of evidence-based practice, quality in patient care, and interdisciplinary support.
Our first submission comes from Lisa Kelchner and Bernice Klaben, who address dysphagia in patients having undergone a partial laryngectomy. Authors present current statistics, etiologies, and surgical interventions for partial laryngectomy and share information on the effects of anatomical alterations on swallow function, as well as the compensatory strategies that may benefit patient outcome. Incorporating services into a multidisciplinary team is helpful for coordination of care efforts and efficiency of the treatment plan. The patient's perspective of quality of life is discussed along with lifestyle changes that may be considered.
