“It is the best of times; it is the worst of times.” (Dickens, 1859 /1985, p. 35). I know we are all growing tired of hearing this cliché, used much too frequently in this current period of economic downturn. However, your Division 13 Steering Committee (SC) is acknowledging that times are tough and is proactively looking at ways of managing resources while maintaining the effectiveness of our division.
In comparison with ASHA’s other 15 Special Interest Divisions, Division 13 has the largest membership and nest egg. Most important, Division 13 affiliates are receiving more resources than they spend for their annual dues. As of November 2002, Division 13 had spent approximately $29 per member although division dues have remained constant at $25 over the 10-year-plus history of the Special Interest Division program. This is because the division has increased activities (e.g., publication of four newsletters, funding research grants and awards, developing policy documents, etc.) and has started to assume more of the cost of service from ASH A in order to meet the obligation to become self-sufficient.
