This issue of Perspectives provides an update on head and neck cancer with a review of the nature of dysphagia with this population and research into new directions for treatment efforts. Langmore and Krisciunas discuss dysphagia after radiation therapy, including the nature of the problem and status of current treatment procedures. Landera, Lundy, and Sullivan review dysphagia after total laryngectomy, which involves a group typically not considered at risk for swallowing problems. Lewin, Hutcheson, Barringer, and Smith provide an overview of lymphedema in the patient with head and neck cancer and the current method of treatment using Complete Decongestive Therapy. Nancy Lewis McColloch, William R. Carroll, and J. Scott Magnuson describe the use of a pre-treatment exercise protocol for patients undergoing chemoradiation to decrease swallowing complications from the treatment.
