The authors of the articles in this October 2008 issue of Perspectives provide valuable insights on the development of the swallow and the cough response, as well as the assessment and management of dysphagia and reflux issues in infants and young children. We are pleased to offer insights from a several different disciplines in this issue.
Donna Scarborough, Jeri Miller, and Kara Fletcher discuss factors that must be considered regarding swallowing development along the prenatal to postnatal continuum. Kathleen VandenBerg and Erin Sundseth Ross discuss the importance of individualizing care for the infant in the NICU. In addition, Erin Sundseth Ross highlights key influences on successful feeding in the NICU setting. Laura Haibeck and David Mandell provide suggestions for multidisciplinary management of pediatric dysphagia using an aerodigestive clinic model. Additional food for thought is provided to our readers by Joan Arvedson, who highlights issues related to the development and significance of the cough response in infants. I'd like to thank all of our authors for sharing their knowledge and expertise with our readers.
