Dysphagia teams are becoming more commonplace in many hospitals in Sweden. The management could be very different from one hospital to another but often a speech-language pathologist is the one who keeps the team together.
At the University Hospital MAS in Malmö, we started a dys-phagia team in early 90s. The hospital is one of the largest hospitals in the southern part of the country and has 6,000 employees, 70 departments, 790 beds, and 23 care centers. MAS are well known in several different fields. The department of plastic surgery has a special section for reconstruction of cleft palate and an intensive care unit for burn victims. Another well-known specialty is hand surgery. In the field of hemophilia, the scientific studies about Walden-strom’s disease is known all over the world. A World Federation of Hemophilia Training and Treatment Center also is situated here. Diabetes science and treatment is another field where MAS holds a leading position.
