Following publication of my April 13, 2004 ASHA Leader article, “Verdict Still Out on Electrical Stimulation: More Research Needed on ‘E-Stim’ Techniques,“ I was deluged with responses from ASHA members as well as individuals from other professions about their views on this emerging treatment for oropharyngeal dysphagia. Many individuals have requested additional guidance about the use of electrical stimulation in their clinical practice. I would like to share a few additional thoughts that I hope will be of value to affiliates when considering e-stim or any emerging dysphagia treatment modality.
