The first quarter of 2003 was a very busy time for Division 13. Our Steering Committee held a very productive two-and-one-half-day meeting at the National Office in late January. The 2002 Strategic Plan was finalized. Highlights were sent to all affiliates in a recent division mailing. In addition, the 2003 Strategic Plan was developed and will be provided to affiliates in the near future.
One of the key initiatives of the 2003 plan is the recruitment, mentoring, and involvement of students in the division. The word mentor has an ancient origin. Mentors have been described as advisors, tutors, masters, sponsors, and models. The Steering Committee and I challenge you to join us in becoming a mentor. One way of doing so is by sponsoring a student’s membership in the division. What other $10 investment would guarantee you such a significant future return or yield? It only cost me less than three Starbucks’ venti skim lattes! To mentor/sponsor a student, just pay the application fee (by reimbursing the applicant, for example). Then, please e-mail me at Paula. Sullivan@med.va.gov informing me of your sponsorship. That way, I can recognize your contribution in a future issue of Perspectives.
