In accordance with the Stage II Petition for Specialty Board Recognition in Swallowing and Swallowing Disorders (BRS-S) that was approved by the ASHA Council on Clinical Specialty Recognition (CCSR) in December 2001, the Inaugural Specialty Board in Swallowing and Swallowing Disorders was formed in September 2002. The Steering Committee of Division 13 was the petitioning group for Specialty Board Recognition in Swallowing and Swallowing Disorders. This process was initiated in 1995 under the leadership of Barbara Sonies. The establishment of an inaugural board was a premier accomplishment. Our appreciation is extended to Dr. Sonies and committee members (Barbara Grande, Cathy Lazarus, David Hartman, Maureen Lefton-Greif, Jeri Logemann, JoAnne Robbins, Richard Robinson, Bonnie Martin-Harris, and Caryn Easterling) who participated in various stages of the Stage I and Stage II petition documents and meticulously incorporated comments from affiliates that resulted from the widespread peer-review.
