Whether clearly stated or implied, every course has a purpose. My course on Evaluation and Treatment of Swallowing Disorders has the goal of preparing master’s-level graduate students to efficiently and accurately evaluate and treat oropharyngeal dysphagic patients in a variety of work sites. With this goal, the class emphasizes assessment and treatment procedures, their advantages and disadvantages, and applications of these procedures to various dysphagic populations, in addition to the physiologic rationales for use of the various diagnostic and treatment procedures and the data to support their efficacy with various populations.
At Northwestern, we are on a quarter rather than a semester system, which gives us 19 to 20 two-hour class sessions during the spring quarter when this course is taught. The 2-hour class sessions are devoted to lecture discussion of the topics listed below:
