Much to tell you since the June issue of Perspectives on Swallowing and Swallowing Disorders
As you may recall, the March 2002 Coordinator’s Column focused on the issue of cross training other professions to provide dysphagia services. Subsequently, the Steering Committee and ASHA’s Health Care Services staff received approximately 30 calls and letters of concerns from members substantiating this growing trend. One particularly disturbing communication came from a member whose corporation informed physicians how to write initial dysphagia orders to “qualified” OTs. Under their proposed plan, qualified OTs would complete a “comprehensive” training program of less than 10.0-hours online coursework with subsequent weekly monitoring by speech-language pathologists.
