Follow the Swallow is a flipbook, where a series of still pictures of a dynamic event are bound together. This action enables the reader/ viewer to hold the binding with one hand and release the pages one by one in rapid succession to see this event in motion. I remember my first flip book, it was fished out of a box of Cracker Jacks and how I spent hours watching Yogi Beera behind the plate presumably giving the signals to the pitcher Whitey Ford for both a fast ball and a curve.
But Follow the Swallow is no Cracker Jack toy. It is a serious tool for teaching patients, their families and the staff about non-dysphagic and dysphagic swallowing. By flipping the pages in one direction, one sees the non-dysphagic swallow with the bolus traveling through the oral cavity, the oropharynx and into the proximal esophagus. By then, turning the book over, one can follow the bolus of a dysphagic swallow through penetration and frank aspiration.
