The October 2003 Division 13 newsletter and the dysphagia listserv reported, in error, no Correct Coding Initiative (CCI) edits for the clinical dysphagia evaluation (CPT 92610) when paired with a dysphagia instrumental assessments (CPT 92611, 92612 or 92616). A separate CCI “Mutually Exclusive” code set does include these procedures. Medicare will allow payment for both procedures performed on the same day if the code modifier “-59” is attached to either the clinical evaluation code or the instrumental assessment code. The modifier denotes a procedure distinct or independent from the paired code. Ensure that the distinction is clearly documented in the medical record.
