Can I perform a bedside/clinical evaluation of swallowing and a modified barium swallow study on an outpatient (Medicare Part B) on the same day and have the facility be reimbursed?
Yes. Which codes are reimbursed is determined by a process called the National Correct Coding Initiative, commonly called CCI edits. If two codes are listed as a pair on the edit list, Medicare states that the codes cannot be used on the same date by the same provider. Codes are paired on the edit list if one is considered to be a component of the other or otherwise considered inappropriate by Medicare to be reported together. The CCI edits, updated quarterly, cover all practice settings except hospital outpatient departments. The edit system for hospital out-patients is the OCE, or Outpatient Code Editor. The OCE, also updated quarterly, incorporates most of the revisions included in the CCI’s prior quarterly update.
