When I first ventured into the world of endoscopy to evaluate and treat dysphagia, research was the furthest thing from my mind. As with many other new discoveries in the world of science, serendipity and an open mind played a large part. In 1986, I was heavily involved in the clinical world of dysphagia, seeing patients daily. A regular point of frustration for me was the fact that there were patients for whom we could not do an adequate fluoroscopy examination because of their fragile medical condition, obesity, presence of contractures, bedsores, and need for ventilation and ICU back-up. In those days, we did not have a custom fluo-roscopy chair, and some of our patients presented quite a significant challenge for us!
