Safe Liquids, by Janet Lockhart and Tom Rader, is a kit, marketed by Thinking Publications®, designed to assist in the preparation of thickened liquids for dysphagic patients. The kit is enclosed in a plastic box with a lid. It includes a brochure entitled “Preparing the Right Thickness Every Time: A Guide for Caregivers and Families,” a demonstration videotape, a laminated viscosity chart, and an 8mm aperture funnel that retails for $45.00, $30.00 for five charts and manuals only, or $8.50 for one manual and one chart.
In the brochure, the authors explain why they selected viscosity as their technique for assessing the thickness of liquids. They describe, in detail, their technique for measuring the viscosity of liquids. Their viscosity continuum includes the following: thin, nectar, syrup, sauce, honey, and pudding. They assign a tolerance range of flow time through the funnel for each thickness. Subsequently, lists of liquids in each category, precautions, alternative measurement techniques, and resources are included in the brochure. The videotape script generally replicates the brochure and provides demonstrations of the measurement technique.
