Joining a research effort can be extremely rewarding while challenging clinicians to think beyond the needs of a single patient and to focus on the larger perspective. New endeavors, however worthwhile, create challenges that require clinicians to evaluate themselves professionally as well as the systems in which they practice. While the minor changes associated with research rarely create new obstacles, they may exacerbate pre-existing issues. Implementing a research protocol can be the impetus for addressing challenges and may ultimately make a clinical practice stronger.
Challenges that were encountered in the implementation of Protocol 201: Randomized Study of Two Interventions for Liquid Aspiration are presented in the table.
