University of California-Davis Medical Center’s dysphagia care team presents their model for swallowing assessment and treatment planning in a resource-rich manual that can serve as a blueprint for building a strong swallowing program in the hospital setting.
The first several chapters review normal and disordered swallow from an anatomical and physiologic perspective. The chapter on nursing evaluation gives a detailed description of aspiration with clear precautions. It would be useful for training staff on the floors. The Clinical Swallow Evaluation provides a useful outline of the steps in bedside swallow assessment; particularly useful for the new clinician. Slightly confusing is the placement of the dietitian’s assessment and pediatric feeding assessment chapters at the end of the book, after the treatment planning chapter. However, the content is useful and clear. The table of normal development included in the pediatric chapter provides an excellent teaching tool for working with parents and caregivers.
