While working on my doctorate at the University of Iowa, I enjoyed participating in discussions with a multidisciplinary group of professionals interested in swallowing and its disorders. I benefited greatly from these cross-disciplinary discussions at the university level and wanted to expand these discussions to a global level. I had been actively using the Internet and I thought this communication structure would continue to grow. The cost of computer hardware and Internet access was decreasing and it was becoming more available to the average person. Thus in 1995 I created (with the help of my husband) the dysphagia mail list to utilize this worldwide network. By creating a global village of dysphagia colleagues, I have afforded myself (and hopefully the membership as well) with an opportunity to teach and to learn in all corners of the world. Today, the mail list is over 1,000 members and is represented by many disciplines, including speech pathology, radiology, nutrition, otolaryngology, pediatrics, physical therapy, and occupational therapy.
