In this, my next-to-last column, I want to begin a sort of reminiscence of the Division. I realize how long I have been involved with the division when this is a plausible subject! To reinforce my feelings of aging, I am reminded that this is a pediatric focus issue. My only link to pediatrics is that I am the mother of two ex-pediatric children who daily remind me of my geriatric (and maternal) failings. I have a lot to learn—about tattoos, piercing… and pediatric dysphagia, and I have been really looking forward to this issue.
Many of us joined the division without a clear idea of how it was formed. It all started in 1986 with a concept paper written by an ad hoc committee that was considering specialty recognition. In 1988, the Legislative Council (LC) approved the Plan for Special Interest Divisions. The first Interim Coordinators met in 1990, and divisions were up and running in 1991. There were 11 divisions inaugurated in 1991, with our division added in 1992. Barbara Sonies was the first Coordinator and I am just the second, so we are still a young group.
