Speech-language pathologists who provide swallowing evaluation services are reminded that the CPT code 92525 can be used only once per patient, whether a clinical (bedside) evaluation and instrumental assessment (usually videofluoroscopy) are completed on the same or on separate days. Both encounters should be billed as only one service and coded one time as 92525.
This requirement creates difficulties in measurement of productivity for many clinicians, according to inquiries received by ASHA. They report that this billing forces them to choose one of those two days to indicate services rendered, which leaves the encounter on the other day uncoded, making them appear unproductive during that time.
