Welcome to our summer issue of the Division 13, Dysphagia newsletter. Our division has had a busy and profitable spring and I'd like to update you on our projects and accomplishments:
In May, our division submitted a Letter of Intent to establish specialty recognition in the area of swallowing disorders to the Clinical Specialty Board (CSB) within ASHA. The preliminary review of our letter was accepted by the CSB, which means that it can now go out for public comment. The ASHA Leader will soon publish an announcement of our Letter of Intent in hopes of generating comments from individuals, consumers, and professional groups regarding the appropriateness of dysphagia as an area of specialized practice and the appropriateness of our division as the petitioning group that represents speech-language pathologists who are practitioners in dysphagia. Once we get through that process, our division will be given the right to proceed with the Specialty Recognition Application. The application will define the process by which a specialty recognition program in swallowing disorders will be accomplished. The application will describe the proposed plan for recognition as a specialist, including specification of requirements of the applicants and methods for assessing the applicants' knowledge and experience. The application will also describe how a Specialty Commission will be established to evaluate and oversee the process of specialty recognition.
