In the August 1996 newsletter Paula A. Sullivan contributed an article “Viewpoint: What are the ‘Costs’ of our Actions.” in the Professional Practice column (p. 4).Responses to that article appeared in the November 1996 issue. The following article addresses the response authored by Cathy Pelletier (p.8).
While we agree with most of what Ms. Pelletier wrote regarding the fiberoptic endoscopic evaluation of swallowing (FEES) issue, we disagree with her overgeneralization of hospital speech-language pathologists' views regarding FEES. She stated, “FEES is viewed as a vital tool to speech-language pathologists outside of the hospital, but as a threat to our jobs in the hospital.” This could not be further from the truth in our setting—a 704-bed acute care hospital with another 50 beds in a rehabilitation unit that are serviced by our speech department.
